It was the summer of 1978 when I discovered Kenpo Karate and Alfredo Bandalan. Everyone called him Chief, short for Chief Instructor.
My niece was dating a brown belt from the school at the time and told me all about this Karate class, and how I should look into it. At the time a group of friends and I were playing soccer and we thought that this was something we should check out. My friends and I were playing soccer at the same school that some of the workouts were taking place at. We gather together after our workout and poked our heads through the door and watched what was going on. In those days Kenpo Karate was crazy, from the looks of it; it was a legal means by which you could beat up your best friends.
My best friends, Ted Martinez and Bob Garcia were very much on the crazy side and they could not wait to get their hands on me. So, we all started our trek into the martial arts.
Over the years to come both Ted Martinez and Bob Garcia would earn their Black Belts and we would shared a lot of amazing adventures. Thanks to Grand Master Bandalan we were also introduced to Doce Pares Eskrima. Just imagine if you will a bunch of crazy guys given sticks and told it was OK to hit your best friends as hard as you would like. Well needless to say we took to Eskrima like fish to water. We were the first group at the time able to enter into either Karate or Eskrima tournaments.
Ted Martinez and I would go onto win the first National Eskrima Tournament in San Jose. Both Ted and Bob are no longer active members and as it turns out, I am Grand Master's oldest student. Kenpo has a way of wearing people out because of all the hard work you have to give to the art and when you stack on Doce Pares Eskrima for good measure must people just do not last a life time.
